Afan Forest Park featured in Sunday Telegraph's top ten UK public forests

Afan Forest Park has been listed as one of the top ten public forests in the UK in the Sunday Telegraph.

The Forestry Commission describes the forest as one of the narrowest and most beautiful valleys which can be explored on foot, by bike or on horseback. And visitors can camp or picnic in the park.

The park covers an area of 30,000 hectares and is one of the largest urban forests in Europe.

It already attracts thousands of visitors including many who enjoy the four world class mountain bike courses which have been developed in recent years.

Orienteering courses and educational visits are also popular and Beamer trampers are available for disabled visitors.

There is also a visitor centre with conference facilities.

Council Leader Councillor Derek Vaughan said: “I am delighted to see the assets of Afan Forest Park being listed among the best in the UK.

“Hopefully many more people will come and enjoy what the park has to offer and while they are here will see some of the other attractions available to visitors across the county borough.”

The recognition of Afan Forest Park as one of the UK’s best public forests helps to raise the profile of the area as a place to live and visit and helps the Authority to meets the aims set out within the Western Valleys Strategy.
