Swansea Bay offers a wide range of higher educational establishments, namely Swansea University, Swansea Metropolitan University, and University of Wales: Trinity St David in Carmarthenshire.

Swansea University
Swansea University offers around 530 undergraduate courses and 130 postgraduate courses in a wide range of subjects. The university was founded in 1920 and stands in parkland overlooking Swansea Bay on the edge of the Gower Peninsula, Britain's first designated 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty'. It is one of the top three academic institutions in the UK that offers the most value-for-money university managed accommodation.
Swansea Metropolitan University
Swansea Metropolitan University, formerly Swansea Institute, gained its status as an independent Higher Education Corporation in 1992, but its roots go back over 150 years. Swansea Metropolitan University has four faculties: Faculty of Humanities (including education), Faculty of Business and Management, Faculty of Applied Design & Engineering and the Faculty of Art and Design.
University of Wales:Trinity St David
University of Wales:Trinity St David is one of the UK's newest university. In April 2009 the decision was taken to merge two of Wales's oldest institutions of higher education, Trinity College in Carmarthen and Lampeter University, to create University of Wales:Trinity St David. The new institutuion took its first students in September 2010.

- Swansea University displays the prestigious Richard Burton collection donated by the actor's widow, Sally Burton. The display includes diaries, books, correspondence and other private papers collected over Burton's lifetime.
- Swansea Metropolitan's faculty of Applied Design and Engineering has been awarded the highest possible grading in a recent Department for Trade and Industry report.
