£7 M Boost to make train station more accessible

ABERAVON MP Hywel Francis has welcomed news of a £7 million boost for Port Talbot Parkway railway station.

21st July 2010, South Wales Evening Post

The station is in line for major improvement work, due for completion by 2014, to make it easier to access.

The upgrade is part of the Wales Enhanced Station Improvement scheme, and is backed by £21 million of European funding.

The money is meant to help more people — including those with disabilities — use trains to reach jobs, shops and recreational activities.

Announcing the funding yesterday, Deputy First Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones said: "This programme will not only encourage greater use of rail services — helping reduce road congestion in and around towns and cities — it will also improve access for everyone, including rural communities, people with disabilities and those arriving at stations by foot or on bike.

"Upgrading our major transport hubs as well as smaller stations across the region will increase inward investment, employment opportunities and visitors who will arrive at their destinations through attractive gateways."

Arriva Trains Wales said it would be making a further announcement relating to Swansea's train station in the coming weeks.
