Patti Pavillion at Victoria Park
Cumin and tikka good look at cha-Patti's restaurant!
A new restaurant, serving Indian and other Asian food, is coming to Swansea's Patti Pavilion, and is expected to open in April or May. The restaurant will look out onto Swansea Bay and St Helen's rugby and cricket ground.
The new tenant's identity remains a mystery, but he is a Swansea businessman who has taken on the whole building following its £1.7 million transformation.
A business consultant and friend of the new tenant said the large hall at the rear will be used for weddings.
Other proposals for this area include live jazz, opera, boxing, wrestling, antiques road show-style and community events.
"We would like the public to suggest what they'd like there," he said. And he added that a long lease had been signed, but that a few things still needed tying up. More details will be announced in the coming weeks.
The iconic landmark has recently undergone major refurbishment, so it is excellent news to see the building back in use.
Developer and lease holder Mark Andrews, of Andgreen Properties, who worked in partnership with Swansea City Council on the restoration, said the new owner would do a very good job, and pointed out that the premises had parking across the road and a wonderful bay-facing location among the gardens in Victoria Park.
A spokesman for Swansea Council, which owns the freehold for the building, said: "The new extension at the premises will be used as an Indian restaurant, and the main hall will be used for wedding ceremonies."
The Patti was built in 1881 as the winter garden at Craig-y-Nos Castle, the Swansea Valley home of opera star Dame Adelina Patti. She left instructions that after her death the pavilion should be left to the people of Swansea. It was transported to Victoria Park in 1920.
