The site of the former Graig Merthyr colliery, which closed in 1978, has been earmarked as a possible location for a Super Halal Industrial Park.
Bosses from Halal Industries, which is behind the project, met the landowners of the 35-acre site to discuss proposals for the park, which could create up to 3,000 jobs.
Halal food is prepared according to Islamic law, and the Super Halal Industrial Park would provide services such as raw material storage for food production, storage freezers and a product packing centre.
Managing Director, Mahesh Jayanarayan, said that the jobs created would be for people from all sections of society. "We are not only looking for Islamic people," he said.
Halal Industries is due to meet members of the Assembly Government this week.
