Retail park boost for Swansea

A Midlands-based property development firm has committed to an extensive revamp of Swansea's Phoenix Retail Park.

Barberry, which is run from headquarters near Stourbridge, will re- configure the car park and provide a new access road from Fendrod Way to the front of the scheme.

Budget supermarket chain B&M has already taken 18,900 sq ft of space at the site on a 15-year lease under its brand name of B&M Bargains.

Barberry has gained planning permission to improve the access roads from Phoenix Way into the retail park, and has also committed to providing a new access road from Fendrod Way to the front of the scheme.

Work is due to start shortly and will provide easy access to the retail park.

According to Barberry the group has seen strong interest in the second phase of the development and refurbishment work is expected to be completed by September.

Barberry director Martyn Cartwright said the firm had long been committed to modernising and improving Phoenix Retail Park.

He said: "We are thrilled to see how our hard work has paid off by attracting such a high calibre occupier into phase one of the development. The retail park is extremely well located and our contractors are currently on site with phase two, which provides 50,000 sq ft of retail space.

"We are currently working on improving the access roads to the front of the scheme, which has meant that we already have had strong expressions of interest in phase two of the development and we hope to be able to announce further commitments from top national retailers shortly."

B&M managing director Simon Arora said the budget chain had experienced unpreced- ented growth since its formation in 2004.

He said: "We have been looking to expand further south from our home market in the north west for quite some time.

"Having the store at Phoenix Retail Park means we are better equipped to serve the needs of our customers in Swansea and the surrounding area.

"Phoenix Retail Park is in an ideal location close to the centre of Swansea yet provides the floor space we require.

"We are certain that this will be a lucrative investment for us and footfall to the store will be high," he added.
