Swansea Metropolitan University, formerly Swansea Institute, achieved university status in early 2008.
This now puts Swansea on a par with the big league university cities and towns of London, Manchester and Leeds who also have metropolitan universities.
Swansea Institute achieved its status as an independent Higher Education Corporation in 1992 but its roots stretch back over 150 years. Made up of the former Swansea College of Art, Swansea College of Technology and Swansea College of Education, the Institute became a full member of the University of Wales in July 2004.
Swansea Metropolitan University employs around 500 staff and has over 6,000 students, of whom just over half come from the Swansea Bay area.
The University offers a wide range of innovative HND, degree and postgraduate programmes on its four main sites.
- Mount Pleasant, near the city centre, is the largest of the sites in terms of student numbers and it is where Business, Leisure & Tourism, Computing & IT, Digital Media, Industrial Design and Engineering are taught.
- Townhill, high above the city enjoys breathtaking views of Swansea Bay and neighbouring Mumbles. Here the students study Education, English, Performing Arts, Counselling, Psychology, Sociology and Health.
- Dynevor, in the heart of the city centre, is home to the Swansea School of Art & Design.
- Alexandra Road, 100 metres along from Dynevor, is where students study Stained Glass, Foundation Art & Design and Music Technology.
