Coastal Housing Group delivered the ‘Get into Construction’ initiative, a three-week course aimed to equip participants currently out of work with the skills and knowledge to enter the construction industry. The programme, sponsored by the Princes Trust, teached 14 participants aged 18-30 the fundamentals of the building trade, while giving them the opportunity to earn essential safety certificates and gain valuable on-site work experience.
The course is delivered in conjunction with training provider NPT Pathways and Communities for Work, as well as Coastal’s own new-build contractors.
It is hoped that following the course the participants will continue to develop relationships with potential future employers in the construction field with Coastal’s ongoing guidance.

It makes perfect sense to use these relationships to help unemployed young people across the region gain new skills and job prospects, and ultimately build a better life for themselves.”

‘Get into Construction’ saw the 14 participants spend two days of the three week course undertaking building maintenance at Matt’s Café, part of Matthew’s House, which is a community centre and safe place for homeless and vulnerable people in Swansea. In return, each participant was provided with a meal each day from Matt’s Café.
Dan Hopley, 24 living in Swansea, said:
“The course has opened up many opportunities for me, both through the construction skills I’ve learnt along the way and the local industry contacts I’ve made. Before starting Get into Construction, I knew I needed to find a way to support my family and secure a job. Now, I’m much more optimistic about the future with new skills and better job prospects under my belt.”
During the course, the 14-strong group learned specific skills like carpentry, bricklaying and plastering as well as employability and job-hunting skills, including interview techniques and CV writing.
